10 questions to ask an agency before you sign

Agency websites look very much alike, ours included. They all promise professional chatting, growth and discretion. What really sets them apart shows up when you ask specific questions and listen to how they answer.

These are the ten we would ask if we were in your place. You do not need to bring them on a piece of paper; as long as they ring a bell, you will notice straight away when an answer falls short.

  1. Who is going to write to my fans? Whether the chatting team is in-house or outsourced, which languages it works in and how shifts are split. A vague answer here is a bad sign, because this is the part that touches your money and your image the most.
  2. How will you learn the way I write? An agency that takes it seriously asks how you talk, which emojis you use and which topics you never touch. If nobody asks, nobody will respect it.
  3. Where do you write down my limits? They need to be in writing and at hand for anyone writing from your account.
  4. Is your percentage calculated on gross or on net? It can make a big difference every month; we show it with numbers in how much an agency charges.
  5. Do I have to pay anything before we start? If the answer is yes, ask yourself who is carrying the risk.
  6. Which account does the money go to? Yours. Always.
  7. How will you bring in traffic? Ask for details: which platforms, what kind of posts, how often. If they promise thousands of followers in a month, ask where they come from.
  8. What reports will I get? At least revenue, new subscribers, renewals and where people come from. Without that there is no way to know whether the deal is working.
  9. What do you do if my content leaks? Ask them to walk you through the process step by step. Anyone who assures you nothing will ever leak is promising something nobody can guarantee. We cover it in what to do if your content is leaked.
  10. How do I leave if it does not work? Notice period, access and penalties. An agency that trusts its work does not need to tie you in.

There is an eleventh that is not on the list because it depends on you: how you feel during the conversation. If they listen and explain things without rushing, good sign. If you feel you are being sold to from the first minute, take your time before signing.

Finally, every agency puts big numbers on its website. Ask where they come from and what exactly they mean. You can ask us too.
